Mathematics
Mathematics provides an effective way of building mental discipline and encourages logical reasoning and mental rigor. In addition, mathematical knowledge plays a crucial role in understanding the contents of other school subjects such as science, social studies, and even music and art.
In Key stage 3 we aim to build confidence and encourage problem solving skills. We build upon the skills they have previously studied and ensure gaps and misconceptions are addressed. We have a sequential scheme of work designed to fully understand the core maths skills that are used as the building blocks for the majority of the Key stage 4 exams.
At key stage 4 we aim to prepare students for Post 16 options, encouraging them to achieve success across Entry level, Functional Skills or GCSE. Students will be challenged to solve problems mathematically and develop a multi skilled approach to answer exam style questions.
Our aim is that students should enjoy maths and see the real-life applications of the skills that we teach. Students are encouraged to see the maths in the career options and hobbies so that they appreciate the vast array of topics covered by Secondary level maths.
At Tor School we deliver:
- Pearson Edexcel Functional Skills at Entry level, Level 1 and Level 2
Functional Skills at Entry Level
Functional Skills Level 1 and 2
- Pearson Edexcel GCSE Mathematics

Our aim is to ensure that students enjoy maths and understand that some post 16 educational pathways and careers involve maths. Through effective teaching we aim to equip students with the skills, knowledge and understanding necessary to be able to make informed choices about the important things in their lives. We believe that appropriate teaching and learning experiences help young people to lead happy and rewarding lives. | Tor school currently has three maths teachers delivering 4 maths lessons a week to all students. Students work is recorded in a workbook and folder for workbooks. Students all complete numeracy starters to improve their numeracy skills, many of which are required across the curriculum. |
Students are assessed when they arrive at Tor and when they change Key stage to ensure that they make progress during their time here.
Across the school teachers will notice increased confidence in maths skills for example measuring lengths in DT or weighing ingredients in cooking.
