Tor School

Sport and Fitness

Our aim for the students is to improve their physical and mental health through sport, as well as, in KS4, to achieve an NCFE Level 1 Certificate in Sport whilst doing this.

We currently have access to a school field, a small outdoor space and the local gym, as well as other local areas such as Tor Leisure tennis courts.

The curriculum's main aim is to enable students to gain confidence and qualifications to carry with them into their future lives / next educational provision.

Across all key stages, learning will be adapted to meet the needs of the students, with the vision that all students make significant progress within sport and wellbeing at Tor School.

In KS4 we deliver NCFE level 1 Certificate in Sport

We believe in the lifelong learning and the notion that learning should be rewarding and an enjoyable experience for all students. Through effective teaching, we aim to equip students with the skills, knowledge and understanding necessary to be able to make informed choices about the important things in their lives. We believe that appropriate teaching and learning experiences help young people to lead happy and rewarding lives.

An understanding of the importance that exercise and a healthy lifestyle enables students to work on themselves and set their own personal fitness goals. We aim to equip our students with the skills and qualifications needed for them to achieve this and continue to make healthier choices.

Through exploring a wide range of sports activities, students are encouraged to develop their social skills, physical skills, fine motor skills and teamwork.

Activities will be provided by the Sports Coach, to support events such as sports days, competitions, the Olympics and team games.
The Sports Coach will  encourage all subjects to emphasise the importance of physical activity and a healthy lifestyle.

A sports programme will be developed to encourage all students have access to at least 60 minutes of exercise a week.

In KS3 we are focusing on wellbeing and the importance of doing things that make you happy. Students have the opportunity to access a range of wellbeing activities such as colouring, team games, group discussions and offsite activities. We focus on the importance of exercise and healthy eating and how it can affect the body in positive ways.
The schemes of work are tailored to the students’ needs and abilities, enabling all students to succeed and meet personal targets.

In KS4 students are working towards an NCFE Level 1 in Sport. This enables students to participate in team games, access the local gym and set a personal fitness programme, as well as participate in a range of activities such as football, basketball, tennis, boxing.
Throughout Year 10 and 11, students will use the key concepts developed through previous learning and be able to use these skills in the future. Students will also be able to make healthy choices to benefit themselves.
Our aim is to offer a curriculum which provides students with a variety of sporting activities, as well as access to the local gym, so that students can work on their personal fitness goals. By having the opportunity to do this, students gain independence and self-confidence, as well as having an understanding of the benefits of physical activity. When students first start at Tor School, they will complete a basic fitness test so that they can be baselined and be put at an appropriate level. Within the NCFE Level 1 Certificate in Sport qualification, students will complete various activities and theory work to achieve a Level 1 in sport.
